“Cities’ transformative potential for the inclusion of persons with disabilities”
HUMANITY & INCLUSION (HI) is an international non-governmental organisation working alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
Inclusion, accessibility, safety are major challenges in rapidly growing cities. Marginalised and vulnerable people are exposed to considerable risks and see their access to services and opportunities jeopardised. All stakeholders need to join hands to develop inclusive policies and practices, to ensure that no-one is left behind.
HI organised a panel discussion in Brussels on the role of cities in « leaving no one behind », with particular emphasis on persons with disabilities in developing countries.
The panel, to which MobiliseYourCity attended, addressed the following questions: What are the cities’ challenges in meeting the needs of persons with disabilities and ensuring access to all services? What are the benefits of inclusion policies? What strategies and innovations have proven effective? What are the existing good practices and lessons learned from the field? How can international cooperation support Southern cities in their efforts towards inclusive urban development? What vision and what practices to « localize » SDG 11?
