A Five-Year High: 11 New Members Join MobiliseYourCity for our 10th Anniversary!
As MobiliseYourCity marks a decade of championing sustainable urban mobility, we celebrate an inspiring milestone: 11 new cities have joined our Partnership in 2024!
After receiving the application documents and since there were no objections during the 15th Steering Committee Meeting, which took place on December 12, 2024, we can officially welcome several new member cities in the Partnership. This achievement brings our global family to 81 cities across 39 countries. It also cements 2024 as a standout year for new memberships, marking the largest growth since 2019.
While these cities share a collective commitment to the MobiliseYourCity vision of sustainable mobility, each brings its unique story, challenges, and aspirations.
Built on hilly terrain, Aizawl, India, faces narrow roads, high private vehicle use (59%), and insufficient public transport. Unsafe pedestrian facilities add to the challenge. With technical assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through MobiliseYourCity, Aizawl is pursuing creative solutions like cable cars, improved bus systems, and better non-motorised transport options.
Antsirabe, Madagascar, and Toamasina, Madagascar, as medium-sized cities, struggle with congestion and limited mobility infrastructure. MobiliseYourCity is providing capacity building and training, enabling these cities to create Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) to prioritise sustainable transport and improve their residents’ quality of life.
Cairo, Egypt, a sprawling metropolis, battles severe congestion, air pollution, and inadequate sustainable transport options. By joining MobiliseYourCity, Cairo explores transformative projects such as metro expansion, improved bus services, and promoting non-motorised transport solutions.
Chisinau, Moldova, Eastern Europe’s newest MobiliseYourCity member, aims to modernise its public transport system and expand infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. With MobiliseYourCity’s support, Chisinau is gaining access to critical expertise and resources to overcome its mobility challenges.
Davao, Philippines, as one of the largest cities in the country, faces heavy traffic congestion, high reliance on private vehicles, and vulnerability to natural disasters. MobiliseYourCity is aiding Davao in modernising its public transport through the Davao Bus Project and developing a Non-Motorised Transport Plan to enhance sidewalks, bike lanes, and last-mile connectivity.
Harare, Zimbabwe, has a transport system dominated by outdated and informal networks, leading to high costs and unreliable services. With MobiliseYourCity’s assistance, the city is creating a SUMP to formalise informal systems and establish a sustainable, accessible, and efficient mobility framework.
Kaduna, Nigeria, has seen rapid urbanisation overwhelm its transport infrastructure, causing severe congestion and pollution. The city, heavily reliant on private vehicles, is introducing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and developing a SUMP with MobiliseYourCity’s guidance to achieve equitable and sustainable mobility.
Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, as sub-Saharan Africa’s largest city, is burdened by informal transport systems, traffic gridlock, and limited accessibility. Through MobiliseYourCity, Kinshasa focuses on formalising its transport sector and prioritising inclusive, sustainable solutions.
Mwanza, Tanzania, has collaborated with MobiliseYourCity on a SUMP for two years, supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). By formally joining MobiliseYourCity, the city is deepening its commitment to long-term collaboration and sustainable mobility initiatives.
Nairobi, Kenya, has a complex and challenging urban mobility landscape. By joining MobiliseYourCity, the city is coordinating local and international efforts to develop a SUMP with support from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, paving the way for sustainable urban transport.
Looking Forward: A Decade of Impact and Innovation
As we commemorate MobiliseYourCity’s 10th anniversary, these new members underscore the universal need for sustainable urban transport solutions. Each city’s unique approach enriches the global MobiliseYourCity network, strengthening our shared resolve to combat the climate crisis and improve mobility worldwide.
The journey ahead is exciting, but it requires collective action. Together, with your support, we can create more inclusive, sustainable cities for generations to come.
