Integrating air quality into sustainable mobility planning

After having a better understanding of the challenges related to air quality and pollution, you will learn how to plan for air quality improvements at the city level, and what measures you can implement to achieve a pollution-free city and urban mobility system.

In this session, you will identify the main stakeholders to be involved in the planning process to effectively address air quality as well as measures to improve air quality from the urban transport sector. You will also learn how to establish monitoring and evaluation systems for air quality. Here are a few key recommendations and highlights from the session (please activate subtitles to follow the recording in English):

 

• Air pollution particularly affects the poorest and most vulnerable. Anne Chaussavoine (AFD) explains in detail.
• An integrated policy to improve air quality has 4 components: (1) raising awareness and improving governance, (2) measuring, forecasting and informing, (3) acting by sector, (4) assessing impacts. Find out about examples of interventions in each of these areas.
• AFD strongly encourages the creation of mobility observatories in the framework of the SUMP process. It seems interesting that these observatories include air quality in their scope.
• Discover examples of concrete actions that a city can take to improve air quality, proposed in the "Avoid Shift Improve" framework.
• Understand how some levers of action reduce both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and how other actions unfortunately do not allow this win-win
• Through the example of the city of Dakar, get an overview of the types of actors that need to be mobilised to act on air quality.
• In South-East Asia, only 3% of cities have satisfactory air quality, and the situation is getting worse fast.
• Discover examples of national air quality improvement programmes in Indonesia, Cambodia and Thailand.

• Did you know that technological improvements and fleet replacement mainly affect engine-related emissions, but not emissions related to the abrasion of tyres, roads, etc.? Find out how to reduce these residual emissions.
• Although it is difficult to assess the impact at the scale of the whole city because of the complexity of environmental effects and other emission factors, road traffic reduction measures have a proven and significant impact on local air quality.
• Combating air pollution means acting on emissions to have an effect on concentrations, but also limiting the exposure of populations.
• Did you know that in 10 years in Paris, measures targeting traffic to reduce pollution have been completely offset by the increase in the number of diesel vehicles?
