New Partners: more challenges and knowledge for the MobiliseYourCity Partnership

Traffic congestion in zimbabwe

Another two cities, Davao and Harare, and a knowledge and network partner, Concito, have joined the MobiliseYourCity Partnership as of August 2024. This brings the number of our member cities to 74 and at 9 the one of Knowledge and Network Partners. As always, new members joining the Partenariat mean challenges but also more know-how. Each of our members contributes to making the MobiliseYourCity Partnership the leading global Partnership for sustainable urban mobility planning.

Davao City, Philippines: Overcoming Mobility Hurdles
Davao City, a major urban hub in the southern Philippines, faces significant challenges in urban mobility. With a metropolitan population of over 3.3 million and a vast area of 6,492.84 km², Davao struggles with a low-quality public transport system, chronic traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. The city's traditional jeepney system, responsible for high greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbates these issues.
The city is also vulnerable to natural disasters like tropical storms and rising sea levels, which threaten its transportation infrastructure. To address these challenges, Davao is working on modernising its public transport through the Davao Bus Project and developing a Non-Motorised Transport Plan. This plan includes creating better sidewalks, bicycle-friendly roads, and last-mile connectivity solutions. MobiliseYourCity, together with ADB and the other partners, will help Davao face the mobility challenges and keep on this path!

Harare, Zimbabwe: Transforming a Sprawling City
Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, is home to 2.5 million people. Among other urban mobility issues, it faces peak-hour traffic congestion, outdated public transport, and a lack of infrastructure for non-motorized travel. The city's transport system suffers from poor integration with land use planning, resulting in inefficient and expensive commutes.
Harare is developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) to modernize its transport system and improve public transit. By joining the MobiliseYourCity Partnership, Harare aims to leverage global expertise to create a more sustainable and efficient urban mobility framework.

CONCITO’s Role
CONCITO, Denmark’s green think tank, joins the MobiliseYourCity Partnership to share its expertise in urban mobility planning. Through knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives, CONCITO aims to support cities like Davao and Harare and the 72 member cities of the Partnership in achieving sustainable urban development.
The MobiliseYourCity Partnership is engaged, together with all the Partners, including CONCITO, to make better mobility reality around the world!
