The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan is on the road towards sustainable urban mobility

Peshawar, Mingora and Abbottabad, three cities located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan, started the implementation of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) under the umbrella of the MobiliseYourCity Partnership. Those three cities share a number of characteristics as they all experience a huge population growth and urban growth, which generates an increase in demand for mobility. Transport supply is currently answered to by various paratransit solutions, especially in Mingora and Abbottabad, while this has already changed a lot in Peshawar with the implementation of a BRT corridor. Mobility planning is a much-welcome outcome for the cities at this stage of development as distinct choices for the future of mobility will have to be taken.

An international consultant team, composed by Systra (France) and Exponent Engineering (Pakistan) has been engaged in the SUMP inception phase since mid-July 2021. Moreover, the consultant team is working at the local level in close collaboration with the local counterpart, the Transport and Mass Transit Department of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and with the local authorities of the three cities. The inception phase is a strategic phase of the SUMP process as it aims at engaging a stakeholder mapping, set up the validation and monitoring framework between the consultant team and the counterpart and start data collection after agreeing the data collection methods.

The SUMP elaboration for the three Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities is expected to last 10 months. The outcomes of this SUMP will be for each city to benefit of a clear, ready for implementation mobility plan as well as to have conceptual design for priority projects that the city will be able to engage.

Under the MobiliseYourCity Partnership, the SUMP studies for the three Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities are financed by AFD and supervised by AFD and ADB.
