MobiliseYourCity Partnership
MobiliseYourCity has developed a catalogue of more than 50 measures that mobility practitioners and decision-makers can use to design the right interventions to improve the sector in their own contexts. In this session, we will present this hands-on publication and share experiences from our local partners about how they are transforming the sector for the benefit of society, the environment, and the economy.
Informal transport is a phenomenon that can hardly be ignored in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It represents the principal transport mode in most cities in the Global South, and it is highly beneficial to the poorest segments of the population by acting as an important source of employment to low-skill workers and by providing them with affordable and accessible transport services, thus enabling their participation in economic, social and cultural life.
On the other hand, it is a source of GHG emissions and air pollution, it suffers from very low service quality levels and it represents a major safety hazard to all road users.
Leveraging the benefits of informal transport while mitigating the negative externalities has been a recurring challenge for countless cities, for countless decades. Notwithstanding these difficulties, our local partners are identifying informal transport as a key priority through the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). MobiliseYourCity's catalogue of measures targets these challenges by providing guidance on how to reform the paratransit sector in your city.
