Paratransit: Compilation of Resources

In light of the growing need to decarbonise paratransit systems, we have compiled a list of knowledge products that can support local and national authorities, as well as other stakeholders, in shaping more sustainable and efficient informal transport networks. This resource aims to facilitate informed decision-making, aligning with climate objectives and sustainable urban mobility goals.

The compilation includes 30 publications from various organisations, covering a range of topics from paratransit diagnostics and reform strategies to case studies and broader policy recommendations. Organised in an Excel format, it enables users to filter content based on parameters such as publication type, geographical focus, and key themes.

Interesting examples include:

• Paratransit Toolkit by MobiliseYourCity (2023), a series of documents providing a step-by-step approach to understanding, diagnosing, and reforming paratransit systems in various contexts.
• Electromobility in the Global South: An Equitable Transition toward Road Passenger Transport Decarbonization by SuM4All (2021), a report outlining the potential for electrification and fuel alternatives in paratransit/informal transport.
• Decarbonizing Urban Transport for Development by the World Bank (2023): This guide aims to provide Asian and African city officials with policy pathways for 2W and 3W vehicle management and electrification.

While this compilation highlights the existing knowledge base on paratransit decarbonisation, it also underscores the need for more research tailored to MobiliseYourCity geographies. Further efforts should focus on addressing these gaps, especially in light of the Global Gateway strategy’s emphasis on sustainable mobility solutions.
